    Our Core Values


    We don’t ship sub-par work. Our sites reach nearly a billion people each month, and require sustained excellence and continuous improvement over long periods of time. We employ 100% peer review of all the code we ship, a rigorous visual QA process, and automated testing where appropriate.


    We embrace a spirit of openness and collaboration, and we don’t hide things when they go wrong. Alley isn’t a black box to our clients, nor are the inner workings of company management or the intricate financial details of the company a black box to our team.


    Accountability is where quality meets transparency. Our team members are generally responsible for setting and meeting their own expectations with clients and to each other, and for updating expectations when things change. To enhance our accountability to our clients, each project has a DRI, or directly responsible individual, who is generally a principal assigned to the account.

    How We Work

    We have coaches, not managers. Our team members are self-supervising adults who get their work done when they say they will. That said, we do provide structured mentorship and guidance at all levels of the company, and we have a strong culture of learning and professional development.

    We use agile methodologies — Scrum and Kanban — to run our projects collaboratively with our clients. Our project management techniques are designed to reduce stress for clients and Alley staff alike.

    As a distributed company, we use tools like Slack, Zoom, Google Apps, and JIRA, to effectively get our work done without all being in the same place. Building these tools directly into our culture improves our client relationships too by involving them in our primary means of communication.

    Our ultimate goal is to make our clients happy — and have some fun along the way.

    Benefits for Team Members

    We don’t have set work hours or a set amount of vacation time or sick time, although we do require everyone to take a minimum of two weeks off each year. We trust our team members to get their work done and take the time off they need to recharge.

    We don’t have a set work location. Team members can choose to work from home, from an Alley office or from a co-working space. If you’re not near an Alley office, we’ll furnish your home office and provide a utility stipend, or rent you an appropriate coworking space. We provide ample company-paid professional development opportunities and an annual all-staff retreat.

    We’ll issue you a laptop and other necessary equipment — the 13” MacBook Pro Retina with upgraded RAM is our standard-issue laptop.

    If you work in the NYC office, we’ll buy lunch when you come in. If not, you’ll have a lunch stipend every month that you can use to buy coffee and food.

    You’ll have a company-issued American Express card so you can arrange any company-related travel, use your lunch allowance or buy needed software.

    We provide pre-tax transportation benefits, company-subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company matching, profit sharing after your first year, and fully-paid life and disability insurance.
