Alley Spotlight: Davis Shaver

Meet Davis Shaver! Davis joined Alley in 2016 and now focuses on analytics, optimization, and newsroom experience as a Senior Software Developer. Davis is based in Philadelphia, and here he shares his view from his co-working space, Pipeline Philly. His desktop background is a map of Philly that gets automatically updated based on his location through a Mac app called Satellite Eyes.

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Why?
The early 20th century would have been a fascinating time to experience, and much like our own – never before seen corporate scale, dynamic social movements, new technology, and progressive publications and politicians pushing for change. Maybe I’d get to meet Teddy Roosevelt!

What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep (and why)?
I pulled all-nighters covering Penn State’s THON for Onward State – that was hard, but the embarrassing thing is that the dancers were doing two consecutive all-nighters! So worth it though to see Four Diamonds families embracing hope despite the profound adversity of childhood cancer.

What’s your favorite family tradition?
My mom remarried more than a decade ago, and for much of that time we’ve been doing a joint “Thankschrismakkah” on Black Friday every year. My two sisters, three step sisters, our parents, and a growing array of kids and significant others gather in Harrisburg for presents and a big dinner. So basically we followup Thanksgiving with another Thanksgiving, how could you not love that?

What was your favorite game as a kid?
When the neighborhood would get together for Kick the Can, Manhunt, Ghost in the Graveyard, or one of the other great nighttime outdoor games. Nothing like those simple times of adolescent adrenaline!
